Plug-in hybrids, like EVs, are relatively new so options are expanding quickly and there are more and more features available every year.  Here are some factors to consider when choosing a plug in hybrid.

Types of plug-in hybrid. There are two types of plug-in hybrids: 

• EREVs or Extended Range Electric Vehicles. This type only uses batteries to power the car, the gasoline is used to generate electricity to charge the batteries. This is a better option as there are less parts to maintain and the battery only range (when you are driving on the battery with no gas needed) is often longer. EREVs can have battery only ranges from 30-150 miles with gas extensions to 400-800 miles of range. Since they rely more on electric power, they are also the best option for reducing climate pollution.  

• PHEVs or Blended Plug-in Hybrids. In this type, there is both a gas engine and an electric motor to power the car. This has higher maintenance costs as you need to maintain both engines. The battery only range is often lower, 10-60 miles as well.  

Fuel efficiency. The fuel efficiency of EREVs is around 80-100+ MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). MPGe is the miles per gallon measure of fuel efficiency that we are used to with battery power converted to be equivalent. The fuel efficiency of PHEVs runs lower, around 30-60 MPGe. Fuel efficiency in plug in hybrids can really vary, so make sure to check this before you purchase!  The more fuel efficient the vehicle, the more money you will save every month on fuel.

Cost. Hybrids come in all types and price ranges from SUVs to compacts to minivans.  Hybrids often run $1-3,000 more than similar models in the same class, however, generally make up this extra cost through fuel savings.  Used models offer a great option to save money and if properly maintained can stay on the road 200,000 miles or longer.  Hybrids generally keep their value on the resale market, increasing your financial benefit even further. Rebates and perks. Like EVs, there are many incentives and rebates for plug-in hybrids depending on where you live.  You may also have access to carpool lanes and free parking! Hybrid vs EV. Electric cars have all the benefits of a plug in hybrid, but amplified.  With all electric power, EVs have from 100-135 MPGe, more than double a hybrid fuel efficiency.  And they save much more - on average $1,200- $1,700 a year or more on fuel and maintenance.
